Easiest Way to Factory Reset your Macbook before selling it

Factory resetting your macbook prior to selling it might appear to be a difficult task. However, with the right set of instructions, the process is quite trivial. When selling your Macbook or trading in your Mac device, it is important to wipe it in order to protect your data.

Please note that if you do have data you wish to keep, it will be advised to back up your data before proceeding with this set of instructions.

Switch off the Mac

The first step is to switch off the device using the shutdown option. Click on the apple logo on the top left hand side of the screen then select Shut Down on the menu.

Switch On in Recovery Mode

The next step is to switch the Mac on in recovery mode. This involves powering on using the power button and then immediately holding the Command (⌘) and R on the keyboard. This should then load up into the screen blow.

Disk Utility

Select Disk Utility which should then reveal the disk utility screen. Click on the Macintosh HD or Apple SSD in the left hand side sidebar and then click Erase. This would usually take around a few moments to complete (typically around 40 seconds).

Reinstalling Mac OS (Optional)

With the disk wiped, you can now close the Disk Utility menu and go back to the default screen. Select Reinstall macOS to go through the easy steps of reinstalling the original macOS.
